π AI Development - Technical: Control and Validate Output
AI Projects of the Week:
Guardrails AI: Guardrails AI is a startup that focuses on helping AI developers control and validate the output of language models (LLMs). They have developed an HTML-like language called RAIL, which allows you to control the output and generate the next steps if the output fails to validate. Guardrails AI is fully integrated with LangChain, Pydantic, and the OpenAI ecosystem, making it easy to integrate into your application.
Guidance: Guidance is an open-source package by Microsoft that empowers users to effectively and efficiently control LLMs beyond traditional prompting and chaining offered by LangChain. It utilizes a templating language similar to Handlebars templates, enabling the creation of complete prompts in a single file. It also supports advanced features like using iterators in the prompt and interleaving prompting.
π‘ Insights: Prompt engineering in enterprise development requires a strong focus on controlling and validating the response of LLMs, rather than solely creating interesting or unconventional responses. The tolerance for hallucination or incorrect output format is significantly lower in enterprise scenarios compared to emerging AI projects.
Companies such as Guardrails AI, Guidance, and Prediction Guard have developed output parsing and validation tools to address this challenge. OpenAI also recognized this problem and introduced the capability of function calling, which enhances user control over the output. However, many of these projects are still in development or lack large-scale testing to establish a "standard" approach to the control and validation problem of LLM outputs.
